Gas Safety Check

A gas safety check is an annual safety inspection by a Gas Safe-registered engineer to ensure all gas appliances are safe to use and to identify any potential risks, such as leaks, correct combustion, and safe discharge of fumes. The service includes checks on the appliance's pressure, gas burning, air supply, flues, and safety devices, resulting in a Gas Safety Certificate for the property.

What the Check Involves

A qualified engineer will perform the following checks on each gas appliance:

  • Appliance Stability: Ensure the appliance is stable and securely fitted.

  • Gas Pressure: Verify the appliance is operating at the correct gas pressure.

  • Combustion: Check that gas is burning correctly and safely.

  • Air Supply & Ventilation: Confirm there is adequate air supply for the appliance to operate.

  • Flues & Chimneys: Ensure flues and chimneys are clear and functioning properly to safely vent fumes.

  • Safety Devices: Test that all safety devices, like flame supervision devices and cut-out mechanisms, are working correctly.

  • Leaks: Check for any leaks or signs of deterioration in the gas pipes, seals, or vents.

  • Appliance Condition: Assess the overall physical condition of the appliance and its components.

Why It's Important

  • Prevent Hazards:

The primary purpose is to ensure your safety by preventing risks from carbon monoxide poisoning and gas leaks.

  • Comply with Regulations:

It's a legal requirement, particularly for landlords and businesses that provide gas appliances.

  • Ensure Efficiency:

By ensuring correct operation, the checks help appliances run more efficiently.

After the Check

  • Gas Safety Certificate: You will receive a Gas Safety Certificate detailing the inspection.

  • Record Keeping: Landlords must provide a copy of this certificate to tenants and keep records for their own reference.

  • Remedial Work: If the engineer identifies any issues, they will inform you of necessary remedial work and any associated costs.
